Singapore Management University Officially incorporated on 12 January 2000, Singapore Management University (SMU) is Singapore's third university. Its educational and administrative practices are modeled after American institutions, in particular the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which has played a central role in SMU's development. To deliver its world-class curriculum, an outstanding faculty has been handpicked to advance knowledge in teaching and research. Besides recruiting some of the best academics in their field, SMU also taps successful businessmen for their specific expertise and management skills to combine academic vigour with hands-on business savvy. Today, SMU is home to over 4,700 students and comprises four schools: Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Accountancy, School of Economics & Social Sciences and School of Information Systems. With respect to the development of the School of Information Systems, IT-renowned Carnegie Mellon University is playing a strategic partnership role in conjunction with SMU. A new School of Law has recently been announced and will open in August 2007. SMU offers bachelor's degree programmes in Business Management, Accountancy, Economics, Information Systems Management and Social Science. The university offers master's degree programmes in Wealth Management, Applied Finance, Professional Accounting, Applied Economics and in Economics and Finance (by research). A PhD programme in Information Systems is the first doctoral degree to be offered. SMU also has a dedicated Office of Research , a number of centres of excellence, and provides public and customised programmes through Executive Education. Formerly occupying Singapore's historical Bukit Timah campus, the university has moved into its permanent campus right in the heart of Singapore. The new state-of-the-art 4.5 hectare campus, located in the civic district of the city, will support the university's eventual 6,000 undergraduates, along with students in its future graduate programmes.
