National University of Singapore (NUS) was formed through the merger of the University of Singapore and Nanyang University on 8 August 1980. Modern Day University The National University of Singapore (NUS) is a multi-campus university of global standing, with distinctive strengths in education and research and an entrepreneurial dimension. A growing university, NUS now spans three locations - its principal 150-hectare Kent Ridge campus, Bukit Timah campus and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore. It has an enrolment of 22,000 undergraduate and more than 6,000 graduate students from 80 countries. NUS offers a broad-based curriculum underscored by multi-disciplinary courses and cross-faculty enrichment. There are 13 faculties offering courses from architecture to medicine to music. A special feature of NUS education is the global dimension of its courses in partnership with some of the world's best institutions. NUS also enjoys a close teaching-research association with 13 national-level, 12 university-level and 80 faculty-based research institutes and centres. Research activities are strategic and robust, and a ‘no walls' collaborative culture forms the bedrock of NUS' research-intensive vibrancy. A spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation promotes creative enterprise university-wide. This is aided by a venture support eco-system that helps students, staff and alumni nurture the development of start-ups into regional and global companies. NUS plays an active role in international academic networks such as the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) and Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU). It is ranked amongst the best universities in the world, and is well-regarded for disciplines such as Technology, Biomedicine and the Social Sciences. There are two semesters, from Auguest to December (18 weeks with a five-day break in September) and from January to May (17 weeks with a five-day break in February). In addition, there are two Special Terms of six weeks duration each, during the academic year-end vacation to allow students to do more courses. On-campus residences The University has six Halls of Residence namely Sheares Hall, Raffles Hall, Kent Ridge Hall, King Edward VII Hall, Eusoff Hall and Temasek Hall. There are also 3 Student Residences namely, Prince Georges Park, Ridge View Residence and Kuok Foundation. Together the halls and residences provide about 6,000 on campus residential places for undergraduate students. Recreational Facilities The Sports and Recreation Centre provides the following facilities: Indoor Facilities • Competition Hall – for basketball, volleyball, badminton and sepak takraw. • Gymnasium – For weight training, table-tennis, martial arts, rhythmic exercises, gymnastics, etc. • Multi-Purpose Hall – for various types of indoor activities. • Squash courts – five competition courts. • One rock climbing wall. Outdoor Facilities • Eight-lane (synthetic surface) running track with an enclosed field for soccer. • Multi-purpose fields – for soccer, rugby, hockey, softball and other field games. • Multi-purpose courts with floodlights – • Four netball courts within which are two handball courts • Four basketball courts, one of which is also used for sepak takraw • Three volleyball courts. • One sepak takraw court. • Seventeen floodlighted tennis courts and two practice walls. • An Olympic-sized swimming pool and an instructional pool. The Future NUS will be transformed into a private institution in the next phase of its development. To be run as a not-for-profit corporation, NUS will be give greater autonomy so that it can respond quickly to changing markets needs and distinguish itself in the increasingly competitive education landscape. In this scenario, NUS will be able to exercise greater flexibility in making far-reaching changes to chart its own strategic directions, create a unique educational experience for its students, build on areas of strengths and achieve peaks of excellence. At the same time, its missions will be aligned to national strategic objectives and to serve public interest.
